GUEST RELATIONS 08 - 23 JUNE 2010
Well hello my dear readers it is time for some updates on my experiences.
Okay so here I go , during this week and a half I have joined the guest relations department and team. Without a doubt I knew I was going to enjoy myself even though I knew that the guest relations manager is a little scary sometimes she actually turned out to be a great person ( as they say never judge a book by it cover , rather read it and then judge). Guest relations for me has been extremely interesting , it is one of those very few departments were one pretty much covers everything pertaining to guests and others people within the hotel. Such as assisting then with problems or complaints , arranging tours or even just sending them to the best restaurants and malls.
My time in guest relations I have designed a few catalogues pertaining to different things people can do in Cape Town such as the must see places , museums , restaurants , hikes and a lot more , I did this out of my own will to help the rest of the guest relations team before I depart from them. Within my short time in guest relations I have really enjoyed every moment of it and it is one of those positions I really see myself in , reason being it sticks to me that I can show off my people’s personality toward others interact with people practically non stop , arrange and design different outings for anyone who asks for then and of course the little bit of admin that it requires LOL (laugh out loud).
So a BIG thank you to the Guest Relations team for everything , you all have taught me a lot and of course I have gained that extra knowledge that will always guide me and assit me in my journey ahead , so good luck with the rest of the World Cup period and keep those guests under control

Switchboard 01 - 12 June 2010
Well well well switchboard , what can I say? It probably does not take a genious to be able to say “Good day welcome to the …. Hotel and Spa you speaking to Dean”. But it does take a special person to do this kind of job. Answering a phone is simple and easy but one must realise that you the first connection and “face” of your establishment when you pick up that phone and answer it. Many people can feel what you feel over the phone even if it is only hearing you through your voice, because your voice says a lot
Switchboard for me actually entailed a lot more than what I initially expected. Not only were there phones to be answered but the switchboard body acts as a permanent P.A to the rest of the front office team. Meaning radioing Housekeeping to inspect rooms , posting and sending parcels to wherever there destination lies , paging employees if one cannot get hold of them telephonically and many more other things amongst your main purpose of just answering phones and transferring calls.
My time in switchboard did teach me a few new things I had not yet known, but as they say you never to old to learn and one learns something new everyday. So thank you switchboard team in your support to help me along the way and teach me the ways of going about matters within in the switchboard circle, and good luck with answering those phones and keeping those noisy press away “No Comment “

Reservations
Am okay here we go again. Second month at The hotel and where did i
start in my second month , well the famous department called reservations , where filling is the only thing that takes place by the trainess (well so the rumor went). I thought to myself me doing filling? hahhahah what a joke. What so i must go from a trainee manager to a "glorified" filling clerk? HELL NO! Anyway the first week i did actually have to file and just sit and watch as the mouse ran over the Opera screen without me knowing what in the world it was clicking or where it was going. So i just sat back and filled the water bottle and fetched cups and milk in the morning every morning for the month (yeah that's correct for the entire month. I mean can you believe it , i was like the "glorified" cup , milk carrier , filling clerk and coffee and tea maker.)
So on went the month of May and i finally started learning how to use Opera with regards to the reservations side of things. Unfortunetly one of our collogues Vuyani got really sick and could not make it to work for a week or so , which meant that there was a computer available for me to work at and within the space of that week my learning process began. I was doing arrivals , checking and answering emails , phoning people , taking telephonic reservations which did not start out very good. Lesson 1: never give a guest a STO rate big NO NO but you know me. Anyhow i learned my lesson and ever since that day most of my reservations have been successful.
Within that week i was grateful for every moment i could spend doing something to contribute to the reservations team. As well as feeling extremely privalleged to be able to do what i did seeing that a lot of trainees do not get that kind of experience ( So i guess the filling rumour was true then :-)
I have really enjoyed my time in reservations. It has taught me a lot and has given me great experience for my journey ahead in this industry and i would like to thank: the entire reservations team for all your help it really takes special people like you , who are able to give their time to help others when they too have a lot to do themselves and with every single one of you helping me , i have obtained great knowledge and experience for which i will be entirely grateful for. So yes keep up all the hard work every single one of you are doing and good luck with the world cup , and you better acheive over target because i will be watching
