Reception Part TWO: 01 - 30 August 2010

Hello all , well as I am sure you can guess I am still in reception (Round two)

Wow where do I begin ? this month has been crazy as per normal (I guess in all hotels it is crazy) but the hotel I am currently at is always busy , well that is what one gets when you in a world renowned hotel.

Anyhow back to reception. I have learned a lot in this month, it is one of the very few departments in a hotel were one can learn so much. I have learned that one can move guest account to other rooms, today on 24.08.10 I learned how to split a bill (which I found really cool LOL (Laugh out loud). The only thing about this month and reception is that I have been working late shift upon late shift which is : 15:00 – 23:00 , which is great because I ca sleep late , but eventually it becomes to repetitive. Were a early shift: 06:45 – 15:15 is not that repetitive, reason been there is a lot more wok to do and you know the old story every guest is different.

I have had some downs during this past month but hey all of us have to pass the learning curve in life and yes it unfortunetly does bring with it both it's pros

There is a saying that goes something like this:

"I learned that good judgment comes from experience and that experience grows out of mistakes."

So yeah that was my part TWO in reception
Love you all

Hotel of month The Townhouse Hotel and Conference Centre: August 2010

Hello all my fellow readers here is m hotel of the month: The Townhouse Hotel and Conference centre and below is just some brief history and what one can experience at this stunning modern 4 * Hotel

"For both business and leisure, the Townhouse Hotel & Conference Centre is Cape Town’s most perfectly appointed hospitality venue.

We’re set in a surprisingly tranquil corner of the city centre, adjacent to the South African Parliamentary precinct and the historic oak-lined avenues of the famed Dutch East India Company Gardens, established some 350 years ago to offer provisions and respite to visitors to this port.

Though we offer 4-star comforts and amenities decidedly more 21st century, the Townhouse Hotel is still an intimate, individualised hotel experience, with just 106 selected en-suite accommodation options - from single rooms to deluxe and deluxe family suites.

Beautifully designed and newly refurbished, these inviting climate-controlled spaces include free high-speed Internet and DSTV, and personal touches like freshly-baked cookies from our Michelin- trained executive chef, who conceives the hotel’s gourmet menu, showcasing unique South African flavours and vintages.

For business travelers, parliamentary visitors or conference delegates, we are an especially convenient “office from home” thanks to our new, state-of-the-art Conference Centre which offers a range of fully equipped and catered presentation, function and meeting facilities on two spacious levels, served by easy on-site parking.

For leisure seekers, we are a natural point of departure to attractions like the Cape Town Castle, major museums and the souvenir shopping mecca of Greenmarket Square, while the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain are easily accessible.

So, join us at the Townhouse Hotel & Conference Centre. The slicker city hotel alternative!

Should you be in Cape Town please feel free to visit us to view our hotel."

Reception/Marketing 1-31 JULY 2010

The month of July: cancerian month, the month of so many things good and not so good but yes not going to mention the bad stuff because this is not what this blog is about.

From the 1-22 of July I had been in reception (my first month of the 2 months to go in reception). Wow reception was hectic so much things to learn and do, it was actually quite scary in the beginning but as the month went on I got use to all the pressure (not perfectly) but good thus far. I learned how to use Opera in aspects pertaining to the front office division, things like: banking, checking in/out guests, moving transactions, moving accounts to PM accounts and of course the A/R (bill back) facilities a lot of companies and tour operators. It was a huge learning curve for me because all the above mentioned was not an easy task and didn’t take a week to learn a little over that (seeing that I am a fast learner) but at the end of the day I still have a lot to learn.

During the last 11 days of the month 22-31 July I was moved to marketing to help the team out with regards to data capturing , YES people data capturing over 3000 individual profiles and 400 business cards. I have never ever put so much data into one PC in my life, I think I need to win an award for the most profiles created on the Opera system LOL . But at the end of the day it was long and repetitive work I am happy I could help the team out , the second time in my traineeship I was moved to marketing , but hey I am not complaining the more experience the better. So thanks everyone for adding to my knowledge during the month of July

Travel Desk 26 - 30 JUNE 2010

Okay so now I am at the travel desk or better know as the concierges desk. I have learned quite a bit being here due to the fact I never knew how much the travel desk actually deals with.

Once knowledge of places and areas in and around Cape Town really has to be jacked up as well as ones general knowledge, seeing that so many people are always asking for directions and “how do I get here” and “where this place is”. Travel desk also consisted of being able to book transfers to and from places, as well as guided tours at a very steep price I would say , but hey at the end of the day this is a hotel and the prices are unfortunately high. One good thing about travel desk is that there is a wide variety of travel chooses , guests do not have to use the hotels vehicles but could also use private cabs and taxis.

During my time at travel desk I learned the art of booking transfers and “fast Posting” on the opera system which proved to be a very handy tool thus far in the department I am currently working in (hint hint) , So I want to thank the entire team at the travel desk for all your help and contribution to my journey in this industry it will be greatly appreciated and remembered

Love
